Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

As any prominent awards ceremony nears, there’s always an outcry for introducing additional classifications to recognize unsung work and delight the hearts of fans with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial above others. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
